Bodhi (Sanskrit) is both a Pali and Sanskrit word traditionally translated as "enlightenment", but frequently (and more accurately) translated as "awakening" or "to Know". The word "buddha" means "one who has awakened." Although its most common usage is in the context of Buddhism, bodhi is also a technical term, with various usages, in other Indian philosophies and traditions. Bodhi is an abstract noun formed from the verbal root budh (to awake, become aware, notice, know or understand,) corresponding to the verbs bujjhati (Pali) and bodhati or budhyate (Sanskrit). The name given to the tree at Bodh Gaya under which the Buddha sat on the night he attained enlightenment. The tree itself was a type of fig with the botanical name Ficus religiosa. In the centuries after the Buddha, the Bodhi tree became a symbol of the Buddha's presence and an object of worship. King Asoka's daughter, the nun Sanghamitta, took a cutting of the tree to Sri Lanka where it still grows in the island's ancient capital of Anaradapura. So in buddhist life, bodhi seeds and bodhis roots was made into 108 beads malas, wrist malas and rosary bracelets. This can help buddhist people know the buddhist knowledge and life.
